![]() ![]() While businesses and government agencies give citizens New Year’s Day and often an extra couple of days off from work, the Spring Festival is actually a 15-day affair, ending with what is known as the Lantern Festival on day 15. The cleaning is believed to help wash away any bad luck from the previous year, and the decorating includes red and gold scrolls and banners with words such as luck, prosperity, and fortune in the hopes the new year will bring these attributes. But for days or weeks before this gathering, extensive preparations are made that include cleaning, buying or making new clothing, decorating the home, and cooking various specialty items. On the eve of the Chinese New Year, family members traditionally gather together to celebrate with a feast and gift-giving of hong bao, or red envelopes filled with money.
